The arrival of the aging population is one of the important factors for the current high incidence of brain-related diseases and osteoporosis(OP). Recent studies have shown that the onset of OP often occurs simultaneously with brain-related diseases. For example, Parkinson’s disease(PD) patients and OP patients have a certain overlap. Brain lesions can directly or indirectly lead to reduced activity and even long-term bed rest loss of muscles and mechanical stress stimulation of bones, leading to bone loss, and ultimately leading to the occurrence and development of OP. Modern traditional Chinese medicine often focuses on the prevention and treatment of OP in the kidney, liver, spleen and other organs, while ignoring the role of the “brain”. However, the human body is an organic whole. The brain is the core center of the human nervous system through neuropeptides and other signal substances directly or indirectly affect the formation and metabolism of human bone. Therefore, the two systems of brain and bone are mutually beneficial in physiology, and brain diseases and OP are mutually cause and effect in pathology. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the brain is a sea of marrow, which dominates the life activities of the human body. The sea of marrow is filled to nourish the limbs. If the sea of marrow is empty, the bones and muscles become dystrophic and cause osteopenia. Therefore, this article is based on the theory of “brain as the sea of marrow” in traditional Chinese medicine, combined with modern medical research results, to explore the correlation between brain-related diseases and OP,and provide new theoretical ideas for the prevention and treatment of OP.
