Objective:To explore the effects of plateau hypoxia under different altitudes on testosterone, estradiol, red blood cell count and hemoglobin changes in rats.Methods:Ninety-six Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups of different altitudes,namely,1 500m(control),3 500 m,5000mand6000m.Each group was further divided into four subgroups with 12 h,24hand 48 hhypoxia duration. Thus, there were a total of 12 groups with 8rats in each. The rats in the control group were fostered regularly at the altitude of 1 500 m while the hypoxia groups were fostered in chambers simulating plateau hypoxia with different altitudes. After hypoxia exposure for 12 h,24hand 48 h,the rats were executed after heart blood collection. The testis and epididymis tissue were separated and weighed in order to calculate the testis and epididymis indexes. The RBC,HGB,serum testosterone(T)and estradiol(E2)levels were measured. Results:Compared with those in the control group, the testis and epididymis indexes showed a tendency of decrease with no statistical significance. The levels of T and E2 revealed a statistically significant decline while the levels of RBC and HGB increased significantly with the elevation of altitude(P<0.05).Conclusion:With the elevation of altitude, the secretion of sex hormones decreased, indicating that hypoxia may inhibit the function of sex gland. The increase of RBC counts and HGB shows an adaptable and compensatory change of body.
