The fish-skin culture of the Hezhe ethnic group is an original-ecological form of ethnic culture that emerged from the community’s traditional modes of production and daily life.It not only served as an important means of subsistence for the Hezhe people but also embodies their wisdom of harmonious coexistence with nature, functioning as a vivid carrier of ethnic identity and spiritual belief. As a material and symbolic cultural form,fish-skin culture is mainly manifested in decorative art, painting, and paper-cutting.From the perspectives of artistic thinking, contextual variation, and aesthetic paradigm,Hezhe fish-skin culture can be classified into three types:the representational mode, the yin-yang relational mode, and the a priori symbolic mode. Its aesthetic value is deeply rooted in original-ecological life wisdom and collective belief systems, demonstrating distinctive cultural significance.Based on natural fish skin that retains its inherent texture and luster after tanning,fish-skin artworks convey rustic authenticity. The totems and patterns incorporated into garments and paintings express reverence for nature while preserving collective memory, seamlessly integrating practical survival needs with artistic aesthetics. In the contemporary context, effective protection of original-ecological fish-skin art requires careful attention to practical issues, including whether modernized artistic forms can replace traditional ones and how to reconcile the tension between utilitarian pursuits and sustainable development.Protection and development strategies should therefore combine adherence to traditional modes of transmission with a cultural-ecological perspective, ensuring both preservation and sustainable revitalization of this distinctive cultural heritage.
