Since the late Qing Dynasty, calligraphers and painters have established a relationship with disasters through newspapers, magazines and commercial markets, making calligraphy and painting an important means of disaster relief. The two major disasters that occurred in the northwest region of the late Qing Dynasty received strong assistance from all walks of society outside the region.Calligraphers and painters in Shanghai and Tianjin introduced the disaster situation with artwork, raised relief funds by selling their works, and tried their best to help the victims in Northwest China get rid of the survival dilemma, thus saving the situation in Northwest China, which showed their social responsibility. At the same time, calligraphers and painters gradually realized their own transformation and development to modernization with the help of disaster relief opportunities, and promoted the vitality of urban commerce and culture.Studying the concrete phenomenon of the calligraphy and painting in aid of disaster relief in the specific period and region is of great significance for academic research on art history and disaster history.
