Xerophthalmia, also known as corneal and con-junctival xerosis, refers to tear secretion disorder disease caused by many factors, with dry eyes as the main symptom. The common symptoms of xerophthalmia include dry eyes, easy fatigue, itching, foreign body sensation, burning pain and so on.The common treatment methods in Western medicine are artificial tear replacement therapy and anti-inflammatory therapy.During the period of medication, patients’symptoms can be temporarily relieved, but the curative effect is not lasting, and the disease condition is prone to relapse.LI Gao,a famous medical scientist in the Jin and Yuan Dynasties(金元时期)and the founder of the spleen and stomach theory of TCM,initiated the invigorating Tu(土)theory. Its leading thought is many diseases are caused by damage to the spleen and stomach,so the treatment of xerophthalmia should also take into account the spleen and stomach. In the process of treating xerophthalmia, the author found that the spleen and stomach of clinical patients were often damaged, and the invigorating Tu method on xerophthalmia could often obtain good results.Based on this clinical situation, the theoretical basis for the treatment of xerophthalmia in ancient literature is explored in this paper, with a view to broadening research ideas for the treatment of xerophthalmia in TCM.
