Herbal Manuscripts from the Dunhuang Caves primarily record the contents of herbal works in Sui Dynasty and Tang Dynasty and explain the effects and uses of foreign medicines as traditional Chinese medicine. The inclusion of foreign medicines into traditional Chinese medicine boosts the wide application of foreign medicines under the guidance of the theories of traditional Chinese medicine.Tang Dynasty is a period of time when foreign medicines were introduced actively,as well as an important period for the transformation of foreign medicines into traditional Chinese medicines.Foreign medicines not only expand the resources of traditional Chinese medicine, but also promote the exchanges between the Chinese and foreign medical circles. In this paper, the author elucidates the foreign medicines as described in new materia medica and dietetic materia medica from the Dunhuang caves, and reviews the transmission and development of foreign medicinal materials in Tang Dynasty.
